Fractional CTO vs the alternatives: an honest comparison

Hiring a full-time CTO, calling a consulting firm, contracting a freelance CTO or working with a Fractional CTO — four answers to the same question. Here is how they actually differ, and when each one is the right call.

Four ways to bring senior technology leadership into a company

A Fractional CTO — also called CTO as a Service — is a senior technology executive who takes ownership of your technology direction, governance and critical decisions at a defined cadence, from a few strategic days per month to an embedded role. It is one of four ways to bring senior technology leadership into a company.

The other three are well known: recruit a full-time CTO, commission a consulting firm, or contract a freelance or interim CTO. Each one is the right answer in some situations and the wrong one in others. These pages compare them dimension by dimension — engagement model, ownership, continuity from strategy to execution, cost, time to start — so you can decide with the trade-offs in view.

How we compare

Public figures, named sources, and no sales pitch disguised as a table

Every cost figure on these pages is a public order of magnitude — salary guides, freelance rate barometers, official contribution rates, published fee pages — with its source and the date we last checked it. We do not publish Blue Jay Systems prices: scope, cadence and budget are stated in a proposal after a framing conversation.

Each page states plainly when the alternative is the better choice. Different situations call for different models, and a comparison that never concedes anything is not worth reading.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is a Fractional CTO the same thing as a consultant?

No. A consultant delivers an analysis or a recommendation and leaves the decision with you. A Fractional CTO takes the decision, owns it in front of the executive team and remains accountable for it once it is in production. The two can coexist: a Fractional CTO often commissions and governs consultants.

How much does a Fractional CTO cost compared with a full-time CTO?

A full-time CTO carries a fixed cost: gross salary, employer contributions, equity, recruitment fees and notice periods. A Fractional CTO engagement is sized in days per month and adjusts as the situation changes, so the total is typically a fraction of a fully loaded executive salary. The comparison page gives public orders of magnitude; the exact budget depends on scope and cadence and is stated in a proposal.

Can a Fractional CTO become a full-time CTO?

Yes, and it is a common path. The Fractional CTO defines the role, sets up governance and architecture, hires or identifies the future CTO and hands over — so the full-time hire starts with a working organization rather than a blank page.

Not sure which model fits your situation?

A first conversation is enough to tell whether you need a decision, an owner or extra capacity — and which format makes sense.
